What is Combination hormone preparations?

Two or more hormones, such as estriol, estradiol, estrone, progesterone, testosterone, DHEA and pregnenolone, combined in one cream, troche, capsule or vaginal preparation, in the amounts and ratio your prescriber orders.

How does it work?

Each hormone works as it does on its own. Combining them lets you use a single preparation for your prescribed doses instead of several separate ones.

What is it used for?

Two or more hormones, such as estriol, estradiol, estrone, progesterone, testosterone, DHEA and pregnenolone, combined in one cream, troche, capsule or vaginal preparation, in the amounts and ratio your prescriber orders. Your prescriber determines the use, dose and monitoring.

How is it used?

  • Cream. Creams are applied to the area your prescriber directs. Metered dispensers such as Topi-CLICK® deliver the same amount each time. Wash your hands after applying.
  • Vaginal preparation. Vaginal preparations are inserted with an applicator or dispenser, usually at bedtime, as directed.
  • Gel. Gels are applied to the area directed and allowed to dry.
  • Capsule. Capsules are swallowed by mouth. For pets, a capsule can often be hidden in a small treat if your veterinarian agrees.
  • Slow-release capsule. Slow-release capsules are swallowed whole. Do not open, crush or chew them.
  • Troche. Troches are placed between the cheek and gum and allowed to dissolve slowly. Avoid eating or drinking until fully dissolved.
  • Suppository. Suppositories are inserted as directed. If one softens, chill it briefly before use.
  • Tablet. Tablets are taken by mouth as directed on your label.

Follow the directions on your label. The strength, amount and schedule are set by your prescriber.

Side effects and safety

Commonly reported: Depends on the hormones included. May include breast tenderness, spotting, bloating, acne, hair growth or irritation where applied. Call your prescriber or us about any reaction that concerns you.

Who should use caution?

People with a history of hormone-sensitive cancer, blood clots, stroke, liver disease or unexplained vaginal bleeding. Your prescriber monitors your hormone levels and symptoms. Share your full medical history and medication list with your prescriber.

How should it be stored?

Store troches at room temperature unless your label says otherwise. Keep suppositories cool; many are refrigerated. Always follow the storage directions and beyond-use date on your label, and keep medications out of reach of children and pets.
